Overview
This library is not only a versatile and unique collection of wind chime sound effects – it’s a piece of history. Initially recorded for a documentary about visionary composer David Cope, this library documents a room in Cope’s home called “The Asylum,” where more than 200 wind chimes hang from the ceiling. Sound artist Mike James Gallagher and filmmaker Jae Shim meticulously recorded 55 of the most interesting pieces using multiple mic perspectives and high sample rate for maximum sound design versatility.
Cope’s collection includes wind chimes of every style and material, from traditional pitched metal chimes to handmade art pieces made of wood, glass, sea shells, and scrap metal. Gallagher recorded each specimen at 192 kHz using a stereo pair of close mics, another pair of room mics, and a Sanken CO-100K ultrasonic mic, allowing users to choose between a sharp stereo image and a wider smeared version. Performances include light and intense movements, forceful impacts, miscellaneous Foley, and even a few cacophonous “free-for-all” takes of the entire collection.
About David Cope: A prolific musician and writer, David Cope developed a serious case of composer's block in the 1980s while working on a commissioned opera. To overcome this, he dedicated years to creating a computer program called EMI (Experiments in Musical Intelligence). Initially designed to analyze and understand his own compositions, EMI soon evolved into a creative partner with the groundbreaking ability to compose music in any style, including David's own. The music generated by EMI continues to fool even the most skeptical listeners. The film "OPUS COPE" explores the meaning of creativity with the godfather of AI music himself.
